Butt Is It News?

By now everyone has likely heard that photographs have surfaced of Britain's Prince Harry in the nude that were taken as the 27-year-old partied in a hotel suite in Las Vegas last week. And it's likely you heard about it because the photographs went viral.

Nashville Public Relations and Crisis CommunicationsSo what's the news here? Is it that the prince was photographed in his altogether? Or is it news simply because the photos became an overnight sensation on the Internet? Who's driving the train here?

Obviously, Prince Harry is a public figure (even more public now...sorry!). And plenty of people on both sides of the pond have an obsession with the royal family. So no lack of coverage (so to speak...sorry!) by the tabloids would be surprising. But would this story have led our network morning news shows 10 or 15 years ago? Likely not.

So, if a new video of a cute cat or a crazy puppy goes viral tomorrow, will that be news? Let's hope not.

While we're on the subject, what about the official response to the incident from a P.R. perspective?

A representative of the royal family confirmed the photos were of the prince but declined further comment, and royal watchers predict that will indeed be the last official word on the subject. Not a bad P.R. strategy, actually. Further comment would serve only to prolong the story. Sometimes, less is indeed more (oops! I did it again...sorry!).

What's your perspective on all this? Does it bother you that whatever's trending is increasingly driving news content?

And we leave you with these lyrics from "The King's New Clothes" from the 1952 film soundtrack of Hans Christian Anderson as sung by Danny Kaye:

Look at the King! Look at the King! Look at the King, the King, the King!

The King is in the altogether, but altogether, the altogether,

He's altogether as naked as the day that he was born!

The King is in the altogether, but altogether, the altogether,

It's altogether the very least the King has ever worn!
